Anna Gets Dissed

Time Magazine has posted its 2008 Worst Dressed List and Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue topped the list. Here is the blurb and picture of the dress that has catapulted her to the top of their list:

"When the history of modern fashion is written, this will be its Waterloo moment. The unimpeachably stylish Vogue editor Anna Wintour turns up at the premiere fashion event of the year, the Met Costume Gala, which she is hosting — it just doesn't get any better than this — in a dress that makes her look like she's encrusted with ammonoid fossils. Fashion people, how they love to look old."
______________________________

It seems that the dress is that much MORE offensive because she was HOSTING the Met's event. Which was a COSTUME Gala, honoring SUPERHERO themes in fashion.

Are you getting the hypocrisy of those sentences yet?

Let me repeat for those of you who have not had their morning coffee yet

She was HOSTING a COSTUME GALA with a SUPERHERO theme.

What the fuck was she supposed to wear?

No this dress may not be the dress you pick to go to your prom cause you want to be the prettiest, most feminine girl in the room, and no it may not be the dress to do a job interview in or go on a first date in.

Maybe the public would have applauded an exact carbon copy of what they feel more comfortable seeing Superhero costume-wise

Say like a good old, Wonder Woman costume

or how about Cat Woman ala the great, late Eartha Kit

Oops but wait Batman, it was not a Superhero TV Costume Institutes's Gala it was the MET's Costume Institutes's Gala FASHION Gala, honoring such revered and forward looking fashion designers like Thierry Mugler. Whom, has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to Beyonce and her appearances in his infamous motorcycle corset.

The bottom line is that if you are going to slam people because how they dress, slam people who are dressing badly, not people who are dressing for a themed occasion.

God forbid, we live in a world where the creativity and craziness and genius of fashion get suppressed becasue you might get dissed for it, and we all start dressing like The Queen, who is a very proper dresser, with her little matching hat ensembles and wallet and lipstick only sensible black bag and gloves.

Now The Queen is a not a terrible dresser. Her outfits are impeccable, they are the very epitome of taste and refinement for a lady of her stature and position. The pink outfit above is lovely, it really is and in her position its proper, though on anyone else it would probably look like a COSTUME. Though of course it does not look like a costume on her.
It fits the situation that she is in at the time, does it not?

Oops, isn't that exactly what Anna is doing in her ensemble at the Met?

It's unoriginal to pick such an easy target and Time Magazine should be a bit chagrined today.

Slam the celebrities that go into public in a bad dress, that is the wrong proportion, wrong color, or just a bad design, but let's leave off the event targeted garments and the stuff like stage costumes out of the mix

Janet Jackson is #2 on the list and unfortunately, she is not looking her best, but this is a STAGE costume, should that sort of take it out of the running? I mean really, if we are going to include Stage costumes, there are performers out there that could have their own
Worst dressed TV channel and not repeat a show for years and years

It's just too easy to put Anna on this list for an event targeted outfit. Its bad journalism. And in this case it takes away the point of what the Gala was meant to make.

That fashion, though it may be debated as a true Art form by some, does fall under the category of Art when it is done properly.

And Art must, by definition, go beyond what we accept as the norm.

Art allows us to grow culturally and to expand our senses.
It should not and cannot conform.
Fashion, must to some degree, always push the proverbial envelope.

The gala's theme was to celebrate designers who took the theme of the Super Hero, a theme that every child grows up with and we culturally embrace; the Met took that theme and they showcased the great designers translated that theme into their own envelope pushing creations and who pushed the envelopes during their time.

As host of the Gala, Anna had a responsibility to do the same.

If a major publication like Time can't see that and applaud it,
then the world is in a far greater danger than from the current economic woes.

I'm always annoyed when people bitch about other people who are clearly in costume as performers -- when it's your job to make a visual statement, you better not be in the boring LBD. Too bad I wasn't invited to the Costume Institute ball -- it would have been easy for me to go as catwoman in my Patrick Kelly dress -- all I needed was ears!

It's just a bunch of bullshit. I believe some would call it 'hateration.' She followed the theme and they decided to steam roll her for it. I love Anna Wintour and in all honesty, fashion is about taking risks and starting trends. The very people insulting her are the ones who buy clothes based on what is in the magazine pages of HER very own Vogue. Folks love to bite the hand that feeds them. I still dream of being on the cover of Vogue. I'm posting constantly on this blog, but I really love it.

Its ironic how the people who scrutinize others for their fashion sense are the ones who follow the same boring trends and don't make a statement. Yes Anna did go in 'costume' which should exclude her from this category, even though it wasn't the best thing to wear, it wasn't like she would wear something like that the next time an event comes around. Magazines editors are just bored, and need some one to pick on.she fulfilled the 'criteria' and that's the important thing, at least she tried.
