Its a Tamara world

Tamara Mellon has long been one of my biggest 'mentors' even if she does not know it. I have admired her career form afar for a very very long time. It doesn't hurt that I am one of her biggest supporters when it comes to Jimmy Choos either and by the looks of what is not rolling out on the runways of the relaunched Halston, I just might be lining her pockets with a few more hard earned Canadian dollars. So when I saw this post in Vogue I did a silent yippee for her in my head and thought I would share her good news.

HAVING appointed her to its board of directors with immediate effect, Revlon is banking on Tamara Mellon bringing her business gold dust into its boardroom.

"I am thrilled to become a director of Revlon, an iconic brand in beauty and one that represents the image of a confident, glamorous woman," the London-based entrepreneur, who won the Accessories Designer of the Year at the Glamour Awards in May, said yesterday as her appointment was announced.

Mellon has proved her business mettle in the accessories market with Jimmy Choo and the luxury fashion market with Halston and, while it remains to be seen how she fares within the cosmetics industry, the smart money is on her proving a huge success.

Halston Then and Now

As I have my daily cry over not being able to buy any of the Spring Summer Halston collection that seems to now be arriving daily over at Net-A-Porter
(Can someone please fix this damn economy quick! I am already over being frugal - thank you very much anyway)
I do still continue with my utter obsession with collecting originals though - I would not eat for a week to snag a great vintage piece. And you might just see why I have this obsession after you see today's then and now.

This is the gown that Kathryn List wore in 1979 to her husband's inauguration as Governor of Nevada. Ms. List was obviously a woman of profoundly good taste. It was said that she chose it based on the colors of Nevada - blue and silver - and since her hair was silver.......

Gorgeous isn't it?

Now here is the Spring Summer version from the newly relaunched Halston label

Remarkably familiar is it not?

This digging from the archives to produce pieces reminiscent of the originals prompted somewhat scathing reviews at the time:

Despite the mixed reviews Marco Zanini received at Halston last season—and his subsequent departure—all reports indicate that the collection he designed is doing quite well at retail. Women, it seems, were hungering for the twenty-first-century spin he put on Halston's sexy brand of simplicity. So it was rather disappointing to see the straight-from-the-archives reproductions that the nameless Halston design team trotted out for a splashy presentation at the Museum of Modern Art......Style.com

Tamara Mellon shot back to Vogue this comment when asked about the archival digging:
“I think we're really paying tribute to Halston but bringing it back in a modern way,"

Tamara in the new version of the dress

I agree and I bet she had a hand in what ended up on the runway and now in the shops. After all Tamara herself is a big vintage Halston collector. I sometimes wonder if she bought the label because she loved the originals so much. If I had a few extra million lying around I would have done the same thing. Vintage Halstons are hard to find - can you imagine being able to make them at will? As one obsessed girl to another, Tamara I can see exactly where you are going here.

Tamara in vintage Halston

I am more disappointed in the price point then in the almost literal lifting of the designs.
I think there is a reason why women like me go gah gah over certain designers - The Ossie's, The Biba's, Puccis and Halstons. There is a certain aesthetic associated with these brands and whether you are looking to the old or the new, that aesthetic is what you are looking for.

I do not want to buy a Halston that does not look like - well Halston.

I have no problem whatsoever with buying a remake of the original is it works as well or better then the original. What happens more often that not is that these houses that are relaunched try to completely re-invent the wheel. But they lack the balls to really go for it so the results are sad, pathetic attempts at second hand geniousness

If you are going to re-invent the wheel that reinvent it.
If you are going to give your own spin then spin it baby.
Do it big, go large, shoot for the moon.

Otherwise give me fabulous clothes in the original aesthetic, just like Halston has done, or I will keep buying the vintage pieces, and thankfully (for my little vintage shop) so will a ton of other women out there.

If Halston doesn't make it this time around it will not be because they did not manage to give us a crop of gorgeous dresses
because they did
no it will be because of the price points.

The dress in this post?
$4,895 US

Roy Halston Frowick would be rolling in his grave.
If only because he is not sharing the profits.

I Heart Tamara

If you are a regular you know how much I love Tamara Mellon. I think she is brilliant and I have followed her career forever. I think she is one of THE smartest woman in fashion. Hello people, she is responsible for both Jimmy Choo AND the Halston re-launch.

And I have heard that she is obsessed with collecting vintage Halston pieces. How can we not be long lost BFFs based on that fact alone. I have some saved Halstons pieces just for the day she comes knocking as I would let no one else have them except for Moi.

I love when I can post a great picture of her so was pelase to see this shot of Tamara attending the Met Gala.

I want this jumpsuit so bad I could die. It is insanely gorgeous. I am now in perma lust.

I also had to post this photo since we are taking Halston.
Super model Paulina Porizkova also wore Halston to the event.
Don't you love that color?
I know, I know
I am obsessed
Sigh so kill me
But please ...
bury me in Halston?

The New Halston pieces are slowly starting to trickle into Net-a-Porter.

I am just such a nut over this collection.
I am a little sad at the pricing though.
It's higher then what I expected it to be.
And I am the last girl to cheap out.
I mean, I have happily shelled out well over $1000 for some of my personal vintage Halston pieces. (Though I have even more happily shelled out less then $100 for some of my collection - those are REALLY good days when that happens)
But when dresses start to hit the $5k mark. Yikes.
And sadly the one that is at that price point (pictured above) is the one I want the most so far out of the current selection showing.
I just might be waiting till it is vintage I guess.

Halston did not present a runway collection this season at the shows. Instead they did a video presentation. It is showing in full on their site and you can see it by clicking here. If you do take a minute and check it out, then stay there awhile and watch the the Spring 2009 video presentation that is there, and then maybe watch the Fall Runway show too. All of it is really amazing stuff. I bought the Misa over the knee suede boots from the Fall 2008 collection and have to tell you that I Love Love Love them.

In the Fall 2009 video there are a few really stand out pieces - the red jumpsuit - a black one shoulder gown......but again I was a teeny bit disappointed that no where on the site or on the web for that matter is a full pictorial of the entire collection.

Net-A-Porter only has the pieces that are for sale and available now, and the Halston site does not show the full collection anywhere. I appreciate the videos but I want to see the clothes. I want to see the details. I want to see the entire collection so I know which pieces I would really want. Tamara if you stumble across this blog - please add a table to the site that shows the collections in stills. Girls like me want to see the pretties in full. Don't dissapoint your fans.

Oh and feel free to give me a spectacular discount for making you aware of this slight flaw in your presentation. It will go to good use - trust me.

The Halston Event

I was invited to the big SJP visit for the launch of the new Halston Heritage line at The Bay. It was a lot of fun and it gave me the chance to wear a few vintage Halston Pieces from my own personal archives - you know me - any excuse to throw on some sequins or a maxi and I am there!

I was the date of my gorgeous friend Nathalie Atkinson and she is the bestest of dates - making sure I met everyone and generally being the perfect partner in crime!
_______________________

Getting ready in the hotel room - I am wearing a vintage sequin Halston dress as a coat over a black jersey vintage Halston dress. I carried a Halston vintage snakeskin clutch (you can see it in one of the pictures below) and the shoes are ages ago Miu Miu's. When I saw the pics from the event I actually wished I had gone with a different shoe but c'est la vie.

This is a shot of Sarah Jessica Parker with the big wigs of the evening. That is Bonnie Tahkhar in the sequin jacket on the far right. She is the nicest woman I have ever met! She actually dragged me through the crowd to meet Sarah Jessica Parker and I was moments from a big meet and greet but SJP was being interviewed and then the next moment she was gone. Honestly, it was a bigger thrill for me to meet Bonnie (not that you are not lovely Sarah Jessica) but I had read about Bonnie and Tamara Mellon (Bonnie is one of the originals form Jimmy Choo) and it her story is fascinating. I was quite enamored to be in her presence and wanted to drag her off with a couple of martinis and spend a few hours learning all her business secrets! Local business powerhouse, Bonnie Brooks, the new CEO of The Bay and the woman responsible for the huge fashion transformation The Bay has taken, is on her right. I have a funny story about accidentally asking Bonnie to hold my drink before I realized who she was (innocently BTW - it was moments before I was to be photo'd with SJP and I have learned that photographers hate when you have a drink in your hand and I was flustered and panicked). Soooo, I might have accidentally stuck my society shod foot in my non-society little butt, hence ruining my chances of getting Shrimpton Couture into The Room forever. Let's just hope she really did have the sense of humor she seemed to have when we shared a laugh about it later. And if not, then, oh well. I am what I am.

SO instead of meeting her this is my own best shot of the night of her
les terrible

Here's a proper media snapshot of SJP looking gorgeous to make up for the above

The brilliant Flare editor Lisa Tant. I love this picture of them.
Lisa you look amazing here!

Another gratuitous SJP shot for her fans

This was the thrill of my evening right here - this my little vintage fashionistas is moi with the fabulous Wayne Clark! I almost passed out when Nat introduced me. I have a few of his pieces from the 1970s on the site right now. Do I look like a gushing teenage fan? Yep I do and its OK! I was beyond thrilled! He is still designing and his line is in The Room now and its gorgeous! So if you are a fan you know where to go now - to me or to The Room!. But come to me first of course *wink*

After the big cocktail shing-ding at The Bay, Nathalie and I scooted to the after event for a few minutes. I really just went so I could change and wear another Halston piece. For this I wore a chocolate one shoulder Halston spiral cut gown, a black 1970s Yves Ste Laurent cape, YSL Tribute sandals and I borrowed one of Anita Quansah's spectacular pieces! Nathalie looked downtown cool in rolled jeans, the coolest brogues and a fantastic vintage gold coat that I wanted to steal right off her that night and take home with me! (This is another of those wonderful blurry Iphone shots My Guy is so well known for)

A very dark photo in the club. I so loved this neckpiece!
it got scooped up just after this though. So it is now with its proper girl.

It was a terrific evening and I think the new Halston Heritage line will do well. Especially with so many piece of it in the new SATC movie debuting this summer. I love Halston so I am fine with having a whole new crop of girls becoming fans.

I will say now and forever though, the originals from Mr. Halston himself, will always be the pieces that make my heart sing.

PS there was a bit of press from the event and being new blood I made the cut!

Industry News

Its been announced that stylist Rachel Zoe has signed on to sit on the advisory board at the soon to be re-launched and re-done Halston label. Tamara Mellon - who if you do not know is the fabulous girl behind mega-shoe label Jimmy Choo will also sit on the board. Both are vintage fans and both seriously suit the long flowy look that Halston is revered for.

Interestingly enough Rachel styled the spring 2007 ad campaigns for Jimmy Choo. It all adds up to make Halston an interesting label to watch now.

And it's absolutely, still, one of the best collectible 70's labels!

Everyone's in the Hamptons.....

......including the beautiful Glamourai (go peek)
and as Style.com reports

"On Saturday, there were not one but two large-scale benefits, each with their own art auction. In East Hampton, Russell Simmons opened up his house for the tenth anniversary Art for Life party for his Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, a charity that supports public artistic projects for children in the city. ..........A town over, in Bridgehampton, meanwhile, revelers were whisked by golf cart past the rows of vineyards, horse stables, and the long, long swimming pool that make up Steven Klein's estate. The photographer was co-hosting a party with Calvin Klein Collection and Vanity Fair for ACRIA, the AIDS charity."

I have pulled some of the terrific summer looks for you.
Use them as inspiration as you hunt through the virtual racks over at Shrimpton Couture.
Can you spot the vintage equivalent to these looks?
Lots have their roots in vintage that is for sure!
Enjoy!

I have to admit that I do not have the vintage equivalent of this for the stage get up but I still had to share this picture - isn't it spectacular? BUT you could get the feel of the fringe and over the top lux by adding some Louise Black or RSVP pieces that I currently have in the shop

God I love Daphne Guinness - she is the modern day equivalent of all those woman who pushed fashion to its boundaries and constantly forged ahead.
Here she rocks a fringed mini and her own custom made-just-for-her platforms.

Press! Got some Canadian Love Today

I was contacted by a lovely journalist a few weeks back - Suzanne Wexler - who asked for some background from a vintage perspective on the whole one shoulder trend! I almost jumped for joy - you all know my obsession with that look!

The story came out yesterday and I just received the link. I have copied it here for you all to see! Thank you so much Suzanne! You where fabulous to speak to!

Baring arms

The one-armed Jane - Tarzan's gal pal - is coming on strong this summer on the runways, red carpets and Winners outlets near you.

And most fellas don't like it. After the initial "Huh?'' some eyes can re-regulate to the concept - depending.

"I really hated Kate's dress at first," said Access Hollywood commentator Steve Harding about Kate Winslet's Oscar gown, a one-armed blue-grey satin Atelier Yves Saint Laurent. Eventually, he liked the dress more and more - only after he saw other starlets wearing the same style, but worse. "Kate's was the best," he said, just after the Feb. 22 Oscar ceremony.

The asymmetrical trend even puzzled some female stylists at first. "I actually wasn't the biggest fan of asymmetrical," said Montreal's Cristina Acevedo, who dressed Creature Band for this year's Juno Awards and will be styling The Stars and Broken Social Scene for their coming albums.

"I found that (asymmetrical) didn't really give any one look - classic, beautiful or edgy."

Asymmetrical tops pull the eye in all sorts of directions, from the arm to the neck and up to the face, so all that extra effort had better point our gaze somewhere worthwhile. For edgy gals, it may lead our eyes to a flower or even a turban - which is what Kate Moss wore with her silver asymmetrical mini Marc Jacobs dress to a gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in May.

But ladies who can direct our eyes toward something symbolically large - like toward hope, to a baby, or a dashing new president - are the ones who've truly dazzled in asymmetrical in the last year.

Think of Michelle Obama at the Inaugural Ball in January with her white chiffon Jason Wu gown.

The new president's goofy smile said it all:

"How good looking is my wife?" a charmed Barack Obama asked the press that night. Like a moving statue - not a dinky trophy - the first lady's dignified drape swished as she danced. Her bold character, paired with that classical dress, made her the perfect embodiment of a Greek goddess.

Other memorable asymmetrical looks this year were worn by breast cancer survivor Christina Applegate at the Screen Actors Guild awards (in green) and Heidi Klum, who donned an off-the-shoulder disco silver mini dress, with a cape, to the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards in June. Her look was radiant, especially with her enormous pregnant belly.

Who looked the worst? Most would agree that Heather Graham looked ridiculous at the premiere of The Hangover in June, with the outlines of her nipples visible through a shapeless bright blue asymmetrical dress by Michelle Jonas, and a peace sign dangling around her neck.

In her book Seeing Through Clothes, art and costume historian Anne Hollander explains the significance of asymmetrical dress in paintings.

Prior to the 15th century, she says, asymmetrical dresses were worn by the suckling Mother of Christ or the fighting all-female Amazon warriors of ancient Greece. (Amazons, rumoured to have pinched off one breast for ease of combat, were always depicted in painting and sculpture with two full breasts, one that was showing and the other still covered.)

These images usually came with partial nudity - as in, the fabric slung so low that a naked breast was revealed. The woman appeared to be in motion and pre-occupied with a greater cause, which denoted "unselfconscious movement," Hollander writes, helping to conceal any erotic connotations of the breast.

However, dishevelled frocks and exposed flesh eventually took on more heated connotations, including an "emotional disarray," signalling that "unsettling events were under way," Hollander says.

Even though the asymmetrical look has been worn often through the years (think Jennifer Beals in the 1980s movie Flashdance), those who wore it before were often powerful muses - an important point to keep in mind before throwing one on.

In the modern age, the trend seems to have resurfaced from the disco dancing '70s era with designer Roy Halston.

Halston, who brought the one-armed jungle dress look and Grecian glamour gown together, boasted cocktail dresses with asymmetrical tops and skirts that swirled as you twirled. His designs were popular with Bianca Jagger and Elizabeth Taylor.

"Five years ago, you couldn't sell a one-shoulder dress if you tried," said Cherie Federau, an avid Halston collector and owner of www.ShrimptonCouture.com, a full e-commerce vintage site based outside of Toronto.

But, she says, ever since stylist Rachel Zoe and Jimmy Choo founder Tamara Mellon were spotted everywhere in vintage Halstons - only to relaunch the label last year - the one-shoulder look was everywhere.

"Now a high-end vintage original can be $1,200 to $2,500," Federau says. Her clients include Courtney Love Cobain and the Boston Museum of Art, which just purchased a dress for their permanent collection.

Federau explains how asymmetrical Halstons won over her heart:

"The pieces actually change when they're worn on the body," she says. "They tend to be very fluid and loose and really capture the feel of the '70s - freedom, glamour, and women coming into their own after the constraints of the past era."

Another relaunched vintage brand that Federau says is doing great is Hervé Léger, which is designed by BCBG's Max Azria and his wife, Lubov.

In 2008 the couple re-launched Léger line, which was famous in the '80s and '90s for Egyptian-inspired mummy snug bandage dresses.

Azria's Hervé Léger numbers are more casual and form fitting than many of the draping goddess gowns he designs for his other labels, BCBG and Max Azria (though also more expensive). As such, they tend to attract the exercise queens of the world - probably because they're the only women who can wear them.

In fact, just a few weeks before her blue gown blunder, busty glamazon Heather Graham gleamed in a golden one-shoulder Léger at a Vegas magazine event in May. She appeared like a perfectly shiny trophy gal and a must to Vegas's wild nightlife. Her look inspired thoughts of vodka tonics and slot machines. The glitzy asymmetrical number suited her much more.
