After what seemed like a blight on celebrities wearing vintage last year (is there a correlation between the economy and wearing vintage do you think??) they seem to be jumping back into the "I want to be the only girl wearing this" attitude instead of "I want to be wearing the newest thing off the runway"
That makes me a happy girl. I love when celebrities wear vintage. Mainly because it gives all of us vintage loving girls top notch styling tips. But also because it demonstrates that really great vintage lasts. A gorgeous dress is a gorgeous dress. Period. Old or new. Older just happens to usually be more interesting and better made then today's -good for one season only- pieces.
I love Ossie Clark. There is something about the drape, the cut, the fabrics, the colors - he was just in his own groove. It's not that he re-invented the wheel, he just made it sexy. Every time I see an Ossie I think of a line I read years and years ago that went along the lines of "a girl just can't have a bad time when she wears an Ossie Clark". I have to tell you - so far that line has been the gospel truth for me. Silly, but I like to think of my Ossie's like magic charms. A girl is prettier, sexier, longer, leaner and more alluring in one - even a girl like me who is only super model height in her own mind.
Vanessa Hudgen wore a black wrap moss crepe Ossie Clark for Quorum at a premiere recently. It's one of his earliest pieces which makes is roughly 46 or 47 years old. Double the age of her almost. She knocked it out of the park. It looks as young and fresh as if it was indeed, the newest thing off the runway.
Hard to argue the theory of "a girl just can't have a bad time when she wears an Ossie Clark" when you see these pictures. There is no way a girl who looks like this in that dress had a bad night.

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Drew Barrymore
Drew has made appearances on this blog before - I loved her in Grey Gardens and she certainly has done vintage on the red carpet a few times. I am always happy to post a "repeat" defender of vintage so here she is ain this at the Nylon and Express Denim Issue Party in West Hollywood.

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Naya Rivera
Naya Rivera wears vintage to the Teen Choice awards and looks bang on! She kept it simple, just updating this classic bombshell look with modern heels and then just let the dress and her loveliness speak for themselves! Its a great example of how a fifties day dress can work for a glamorous night out on the town - or the red carpet - whichever applies to your life :)
PS. There will be further reductions on the sale items today and tomorrow and some will be removed from the site by the end of this week. Its truly now or never for some items!

Lilly Allen in Biba!

Oh how I love to see a celebrity rock their Ossie Clark errrr Biba frock!
(This is why one should never blog first thing in the morning before one has had at least 2 coffees. One of my followers on Twitter has let me know that this is in fact a vintage BIBA, NOT an Ossie Clark. Ironically now that I am more awake I not only recognize it as such but I actually have its twin in black in my archives - feel free to laugh at me in the comments - goes to show you no one is immune to moments of idiocracy)
I especially love that side shot where you can really get an idea of how fabulous those tightly cuffed - insanely long button sleeves go up the arm before they billow out into intoxicating fullness! My only teeeny tiny stylist voice that is wayyyy at the back of my head is saying - Lilly that bust is a tad too tight but I will forgive her - it's not like she can have one of her people run to the shop and exchange it after all! I also would have worn a lighter looking shoe with this so just the dress was allowed to shine center stage, however its saved by the length of the dress and the fabulous, romantic up-do!

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Christina Ricci

This dress made me think about how funny vintage can be. I bet that this dress languished in a closet or a shop for some time. The color is so vibrant and the cut is a little avant garde and distinctive that for many, many seasons it would have looked absolutely wrong. But for this season - this 40 odd year old dress looks fresh. It also serves to show you that good design is dated only by the attitude, style and accessories of the woman wearing it. I bet the woman who originally wore it this paired it with those (what seems now almost frumpy) low heeled shoes, maybe a hat and a tent shaped evening coat and maybe even gloves. Her hair would have been over-styled as was the fashion of the day and don't even get me started on her make-up. She would have looked wonderful in her day, but dated in ours.
Look at Christina again and squint a little, can you see that long ago girl?
Still fabulous, yes, but the dress looks entirely different doesn't it?
When you buy vintage see it as it is now, let it live now. Just like Christina has

Dianna wore this vintage Chantilly-lace dress to the 9th Annual Awards Season Diamond Fashion Show Preview hosted by The Diamond Information Center and InStyle
Vintage lace dresses are always a hard sell and I love seeing them worn - wish more girls would embrace the lace. For some reason it has fallen out of favor - along with velvet.
Odd since both are such luxurious fabrics.

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Liz Goldwyn + A free Dita

Dita Von Teese and Liz Goldwyn hit the town in dresses that where an "ode to the nineties" Said Dita on her twitter feed
"Oddly, both our 90s dresses will not allow for underwear. I'm not being provocative; just stating a 90s fashion fact that we observed."
and earlier
"Headed out to a party with Liz Goldwyn in our "ode to 90s glamour" looks. She's Versace safety pins, I'm Jean Paul Gaultier corset dress"
Dita dress is Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 2010 from his "G Spot" collection and Liz's is 1980s Gianni Versace! If I can find a front shot of Liz's dress I can publish I will add it!

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Katy Walsh

Kate Walsh attended the People Choice Awards wearing a vintage Sarmi dress that was completley sequinned. I love this look though I suspect that at some point this was a full length gown that has been chopped. It works better this way anyway - the long sleeve. high neck full coverage is not a look that you see often on the red carpet and the loads of legs helps balance it out. Personally I find it refreshing that a starlet does not put everything out there on show. Lots of skin is an easy choice when going for night time glamour - I think it takes a bit more to style an outfit with some coverage. I also highly approve that she has kept everythign else simple, simple. If you are wearing full on sequins, you don't need or WANT to compete with it by adding unnecessary jewels and baubles.
All that being said I think this picture is a horrid angle of Kate and the dress. But unfortunately it seems to be the main one floating the web. Its not giving her much of a waist but I thinks its the angle. Sometimes I think that there is not as much care put into choosing the photo that goes out to the general media when the garment is vintage. No opps for suck ups to designers with vintage - but that's just my cynical thoughts

Celebrity Vintage Spot - Penelope Cruz

Penelope Cruz is one of those celebs that often turns to vintage for big red carpet events - like when she wore it for this little event or this one. I love that in a girl. This is from early December at her London premiere of Nine. She is wearing a gorgeous vintage Ralph Lauren gown. Her clutch is also RL so I suspect she was allowed to rummage through the archives for this one.
Damn it - why are we not friends so I could have helped in said rummaging?
Les sigh
